Duo Solomon–Schwarz · Period instruments
British flute and recorder player Ashley Solomon enjoys a successful
career as soloist, chamber musician and guest director in the UK,
across Europe, as well as the Americas, far East, and Australia. He
is the director of Florilegium, the baroque ensemble he co-founded
in 1991, and has made close forty recordings with them, many of
which have garnered international awards.
Combining a successful career across both theory and practice,
Ashley is also Head of Historical Performance at London’s Royal
College of Music. In 2014 he was awarded a Personal Chair, and he is
both a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Music (2017) and Royal College
of Music (2019).
Ashley and Jochewed share an appreciation of historical music
instruments, insistence on understanding the music written for them
as well as it’s cultural background and the desire to present music
long forgotten, implementing their rich experience and gathered
knowledge.
With flexible programmes, lecture-recitals, workshops and
masterclasses, the duo performs and teaches on traverso/recorder
with harpsichord, spinet and square piano, tailoring each event to
the space and audience.
Their recently recorded two-CD album of flute and keyboard sonatas
by J. Ch. F. Bach was released in October 2024 on Meridian Records
(UK).
“One has the feeling that Solomon and Schwarz have addressed each
concept and gesture. Masters of historically informed music-making,
they revealed the narrative and enigmas that emerge from Bach’s
music—elements that indeed defy words.” (P. Hickman, 2022) “In
Jochewed Schwarz’s hands, the keyboard sound has a fine range of
colours and subtlety, complementing Ashley Solomon’s sophisticated
playing.” (R. Hugill, Planet Hugill, 2024)
